Why Does My Hip Hurt During Pilates? The Real Reason It Keeps Coming Back
Pilates is supposed to help you feel stronger, more mobile, and more connected to your body.
So when your hip starts hurting during class… it can feel incredibly frustrating.
That’s exactly what one of our patients told us during her Discovery Visit at Connect Rehab Chiropractic & Performance.
“I thought Pilates was supposed to help my hip pain…”
She loved Pilates.
It was her time to move, clear her head, and feel strong again.
But over time, every class started coming with:
- a pinching feeling in the front of her hip
- tightness that never fully went away
- fear that certain movements would “set it off”
At first, she tried pushing through it.
Then she tried:
- modifying exercises
- stretching more
- avoiding movements that hurt
And honestly?
Some days it felt a little better.
But the pain always came back.
That’s when the frustration really started to build.
Because she was doing all the “healthy” things.
She was moving.
She was exercising.
She was trying to take care of herself.
And yet her body still didn’t feel right.
Eventually she told us:
“I started feeling nervous every time the instructor said we were doing core work.”
If you’ve ever felt anxious before a workout because you’re worried about pain showing up again… you’re not alone.
Why Hip Pain During Pilates Is Not Always “Just Tightness”
A lot of people assume hip pain during Pilates means:
- they need to stretch more
- their hips are tight
- they’re getting older
- they just need to “modify better”
But many times, the hip is not actually the root problem.
When we evaluated her movement at Connect, we found something deeper going on.
What We Found
Her hip was working overtime because:
- her core was not creating enough control during movement
- her pelvis was compensating during certain positions
- her hip was absorbing stress it was never meant to handle alone
So while stretching helped temporarily…
the underlying movement problem never changed.
That’s why the pain kept returning.
The Problem With Only Treating Symptoms
This is something we see often with active adults in Sonoma County.
People try:
- stretching
- massage
- modifying workouts
- resting
- foam rolling
And sometimes those things help for a little while.
But if the body is still compensating underneath the surface, the irritation usually comes back once movement demand increases again.
That’s why random fixes can feel inconsistent.
The real question is:
Why is your body compensating in the first place?
At Connect, that’s what we look for.
What Changed Once We Addressed the Root Cause
Once we helped her improve:
- core control
- pelvic positioning
- movement coordination
- stability through her hip and trunk
everything started changing.
She stopped obsessing over every movement.
She stopped feeling anxious before class.
Most importantly:
she started trusting her body again.
And eventually, she was able to return to Pilates without constantly bracing for pain.
Hip Pain During Exercise Is Usually a Sign — Not a Life Sentence
One of the biggest misconceptions we see is people thinking:
“Maybe my body just can’t handle this anymore.”
But many times, the issue is not that your body is broken.
It’s that your body adapted around a problem.
And when we improve:
- control
- stability
- movement awareness
- strength in the right places
your body often becomes much more resilient again.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hip Pain During Pilates
Is Pilates bad for hip pain?
Not necessarily.
Pilates can be extremely helpful for many people. But if your body is compensating during movement, certain exercises may expose underlying control or stability issues.
Why does stretching only help temporarily?
Stretching can reduce tension temporarily, but if the underlying movement pattern or compensation remains, the irritation often returns.
Can weak core muscles cause hip pain?
Sometimes, yes.
If the trunk and pelvis are not controlling movement well, the hip may take on more stress than it should during exercise.
Should I stop exercising if my hip hurts?
Not always.
Completely avoiding movement is not usually the long-term answer. The key is understanding why the pain is happening and improving how your body handles movement.
